The Vietnamese economy is growing, and so is the demand for energy. As the country moves forward, new investments in clean energy and infrastructure are highly needed. Energy Modelling Lab developed scenarios to reach the target of net zero by 2050 in Vietnam, contributing to the Vietnam Energy Outlook Report 2021, written jointly by the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority in Vietnam (EREA) and the Danish Energy Agency.
The scenarios found that power generation and storage capacity should be 30 times higher than current capacity, electricity should primarily come from solar power combined with batteries, and power transmission should be increased by 40 percent compared to present capacity.
The findings are published in the Vietnam Energy Outlook Report 2021, which Energy Modelling Lab contributed to alongside EREA and the Danish Energy Agency, setting out scenarios for a growing Vietnamese economy to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Energy Modelling Lab used the TIMES energy systems modelling framework to build the scenarios underpinning the Vietnam Energy Outlook Report 2021.
Scenarios were developed iteratively with EREA and the Danish Energy Agency to explore the power generation, storage and transmission investments needed to reach net zero by 2050.
Results are published in the Vietnam Energy Outlook Report 2021, informing power generation, storage and transmission investment decisions on Vietnam’s path to net zero.
