Viet Nam is a regional manufacturing hub and one of the most dynamic countries in East Asia, with GDP growing at an average annual rate of 6.2% from 2000 to 2023. According to the Viet Nam Energy Outlook Report 2021, electricity consumption is set to more than double by 2050 compared with 2020, and Viet Nam has pledged to reach net zero emissions by 2050, meaning the power system must meet more than 70% of total final energy demand with renewable electricity.
Energy Modelling Lab supports efforts to enhance energy planning in Viet Nam, assisting Vietnamese authorities in building their planning capacity for scenario based, long term modelling of the energy system, by integrating an updated technology catalogue into the existing energy system model, including electricity storage, P2X, nuclear, optimal use of biomass, and carbon capture and storage.
We update the technology catalogue integrated into the present energy system model, describing costs and relevant technical parameters for decarbonisation technologies not yet in use. The catalogue contributes to data driven discussion and understanding of the potential of these technologies, with the expected outcome a broader consensus on their potential.
The results are integrated into the existing energy system model, giving first insights into cost optimal applications of these technologies, and contribute to making the Viet Nam Energy Outlook Report 2023 more comprehensive, supporting investment decision making.
An updated technology catalogue integrated into the TIMES-Vietnam model, covering electricity storage, P2X, nuclear, biomass and carbon capture and storage options.
Close collaboration with UNOPS, EREA, the Danish Energy Agency and E4SMA throughout the update, fostering data driven discussion of each technology’s potential.
Building Vietnamese authorities’ planning capacity for scenario based, long term energy system modelling, ready to inform investment decisions.
